God is light, no matter how dark the situation. Through His power He gives us hope, strength, peace, guidance, and direction. This is the last part of my discussion of the following lyrics from the song, “Way Maker,” originally written by award-winning gospel singer Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu (known professionally as Sinach): “You are / Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper / Light in the darkness / My God, that is who You are.” Links to the other parts of this series are at the end of this post.

Today I want to talk about God being light in the darkness. Psalm 18:28 (ESV) says, “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.”

Figuratively speaking, we could be in darkness when we find ourselves in a difficult situation (for example, a health issue, financial concern, or relationship problem). We also could be in darkness when our circumstances make it hard for us to know where to go or what we should do next. However, no matter how dark things appear to us, God is light in our darkness because:

  • He gives us hope when things seem hopeless. Romans 15:13 states “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
  • He is with us and gives us strength to endure the challenges we face. Isaiah 41:10 declares, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
  • He has the power to fix our problems. Psalm 77:14 says, “You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.”
  • He gives us peace in the midst of our troubles. In John 14:27, Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
  • He gives us guidance and direction when we don’t know what to do. Psalm 32:8 tells us, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

Are you going through a trying time right now? Reread the scriptures above, take God at His word, and trust Him to be light in your darkness.

How do you handle it when you experience darkness in your life? Let me know in the comments.
