hearing God speakThis is part 4 of my 5-part series on the privileges that come with membership in the family of God. Another membership benefit we have as believers is the Word of God, the Bible. The Bible was written by men who were inspired by God, which means they wrote what God wanted them to write. Second Timothy 3:16 (NASB) states, “All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness.”

God’s primary way of speaking to us is through His Word. That means we can hear from our Heavenly Father simply by reading the Bible. As His children, we should have a genuine desire to hear what God has to say. Jesus emphasized the necessity of reading God’s Word when He said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

Sometimes in human organizations and clubs, we have amazing membership benefits that we don’t get to enjoy because we don’t take advantage of them. Similarly, when we neglect to read the Bible, we miss out on a valuable benefit of being a Christian: hearing directly from God. In Psalm 119:16 (NIV), the psalmist said, “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”

Before we had mobile devices, we needed a physical Bible if we wanted to read God’s Word. Now, anyone with a smart phone can read the Bible any time they want through a Bible app or on the Internet. With the Bible being so readily available to us, we don’t have any excuses for not reading the Word of God.

Reading the Bible profits us in many ways, including teaching us about God, lifting our spirits, giving us encouragement, soothing our fears, strengthening our faith, providing instructions for godly living, and, most importantly, telling us how we can live with God forever in heaven. Do you desire to hear what God wants to say to you? Then I encourage you to make use of this membership benefit and read your Bible every day!

What words of instruction, inspiration, encouragement, or comfort have you received from reading the Bible? Tell me about it in the comments.
