Holy SpiritThis is part 2 of my 5-part series on the privileges that come with membership in the family of God. The membership benefit I want to talk about today is that we, as believers, have the “ultimate Helper” in the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Why do we need a Helper? Let’s face it—living a life that pleases God is hard. We sometimes give in to the temptations we face. We do what we want to do instead of obeying God. We choose our will over His will. God knew that we could not live godly, obedient lives on our own, so He gave us the Holy Spirit to help us.

The Holy Spirit, who is God, lives in every believer. First Corinthians 6:19 tells us, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” The fact that the Holy Spirit lives in us means He is with us everywhere we go and can help us whenever we need it.

When we struggle to do God’s will, the Holy Spirit empowers us to obey. Galatians 5:16-17 state, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” To “walk by the Spirit” means to listen to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to us, submit ourselves to Him, and do what He says.

Our human desires are the opposite of what the Holy Spirit desires. Left to our own devices, we will act according to our fleshly desires, which will not be pleasing to God. However, when we rely on the power of the Holy Spirit and submit to Him, we will do what He wants us to do. Second Peter 1:3 declares, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

Praise God that, as members of His family, He has given us all the help we need to live for Him! How does the Holy Spirit help you live according to God’s commands? Let me know in the comments.
