Christians shouldn't worry because God is in control. This is the final part of my 7-part series on why Christians shouldn’t worry. You can find links to the other parts of the series at the end of this post.

The seventh reason Christians shouldn’t worry is because God is in control. Stated another way, God is sovereign. One dictionary defines sovereign as “possessing supreme power; being unlimited in extent; having complete independence and freedom to do as one desires.” Daniel 4:35 (NIV) says, “All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He [God] does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”

God’s sovereignty means He is in total control of all things at all times. He can do or permit whatever He wants, whenever He wants, in any way He wants. However, when we look around, it seems like things are out of control. Mass shootings have become all too common, the news reports violence on a daily basis, and disease and sickness have stricken an untold number of people, not to mention the trouble we experience in our own personal lives. With all of this going on, how can we say God is in control?

This is where our faith comes in. If we believe the Bible and if we believe in the God of the Bible, we must also believe He is in control and knows what He is doing, regardless of how things look to us.

Two brief points from Daniel 4:35:

  • God does as He pleases. We tend to worry when undesirable events happen to us or when we are afraid of what might happen. Instead of worrying during these times, we should have faith that God is in control, and that whatever He allows to happen must be because it pleases Him and accomplishes His purposes. As Christians, what pleases God should please us, even if it means hardships, challenges, or death (our own or of a loved one).
  • No one can ask God, “What have you done?” If I am honest, there are times when I don’t understand and don’t particularly like some of the things God allows to happen. You may feel the same way. However, we must realize that God is all-wise and we aren’t, so we are in no position to question what He does.

When we get to the point where we acknowledge that God is in control, despite what He allows, we will worry less about the things that happen because we will understand that God, in His wisdom, always does what pleases Him.

What can you do to remind yourself that God is indeed in control, in spite of the things you see going on around you? Tell me about it in the comments.
