Christians shouldn't worry because God tells us not to.

Worrying is something many people do. I know I’ve done it and perhaps you have, too. Worry means to “give way to anxiety or unease; allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.” In many cases, what we worry about either has not happened or is something we have no control over anyway!

This is Part 1 of my 7-part series on why Christians shouldn’t worry. You can find links to the other parts of the series at the end of this post.

The first reason we shouldn’t worry is because God tells us not to! In Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV), we read, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

We see several things in these verses. First, God says “do not be anxious.” In other words, don’t worry about anything.

Second, He tells us that instead of worrying, we should pray, not just sometimes, but “in every situation.”

Finally, He tells us the results of praying instead of worrying. When we pray, we are saying, “Lord, I am giving this problem to you; please take care of it because I can’t handle it.” When we give our troubles to God in prayer, in exchange, He gives us His peace which will calm our hearts and minds.

To summarize:

  • Don’t: Worry about anything.
  • Do: Pray to God about everything.
  • Results: God will give us peace.

Even though we know we should not worry, we still do it sometimes. What types of problems or situations cause you to worry? Tell me about it in the comments.
