Earlier in this series on putting God first, I talked about the importance of spending time with God in two areas: Bible study and prayer. I discussed Bible study in previous posts. If you missed any of those posts, see the links below. Today, I want to talk about prayer.
I don’t think I need to tell you that you should pray because you already know that. But, despite our good intentions, we sometimes neglect prayer because we allow other things to distract us or have higher priority. If God is first in our lives, we should make a commitment to spend time with Him in prayer every day. We demonstrate that prayer is important to us when we make time to do it. If we don’t make time to pray, then we must ask ourselves if prayer is really important to us.
There are many reasons why we should take the time to pray to God. Here are three of them:
- To obey God’s command. Luke 18:1 states, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” We are God’s children, and He wants to hear from us on a daily basis.
- To be like Jesus. Luke 5:16 says, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” If Jesus, the Son of God, took the time to pray regularly, so should we.
- To have a closer relationship with God. James 4:8 tells us, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” The best way to get to know someone is to spend time talking with them. The more we pray to God, the more intimately we come to know Him.
These are just a few reasons why we should pray. Why do you pray? If you do not pray regularly, what’s stopping you? Tell me about it in the comments.
